Having a dog had always been a dream of mine since childhood. After years of negotiations with my husband, we finally decided it was time to start looking. Rescuing wasn’t my first thought—I wasn’t familiar with it—but my husband insisted. And that’s how we met Luna. She came into our lives in July 2023, and it was love at first sight.

The first 6–12 months were challenging. Luna was terrified of everything—anxious, unsure, and constantly on edge. But with patience and love, she’s grown into the most confident little lady… who sometimes acts like a dinosaur (HAHA). She has completely changed our lives—a ray of sunshine, even on the toughest days.

Luna’s adoption center didn’t know much about her past—just that she was an unclaimed stray. It broke my heart to think someone could abandon her. About six months ago, I searched Facebook to see if I could find her first intake photo at the shelter. What I found shattered me. The post was a desperate plea for a foster, stating that if no one stepped up, Luna would be euthanized. The thought alone makes me sick. I will forever be grateful to the two girls who saved her and gave her a second chance at life.

In Australia, approximately 200,000 stray or surrendered dogs enter shelters and rescue facilities each year. Tragically, more than 1 in 5 don’t make it out alive—that’s around 44,000 dogs every year.

I just know there has to be a better way to solve this crisis.

This year, Ryan and I are taking part in the Million Paws Walk to raise funds to fight animal cruelty and give more dogs a future.
